Ingredients
- 6-8 large cabbage leaves
- 1/2 lb ground beef or combination beef/pork
- 1/2 c cup rice
- 1 egg
- 2 Tbs milk
- 1 large onion minced
- 2 clove garlic - minced
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 tsp pepper
- 1/2 Tbs Italian seasoning
- Sauce:
- 1 Tbs brown sugar
- 1/2 Tbs lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 4 oz tomato sauce
- 1 Tbs tomato paste
- 1 c chicken stock
Instructions
Soften cabbage leaves in the microwave by placing leaves in a microwave-safe dish with a little water, cover, and microwave on high for 5minutes, or until the leaves are pliable.
Whisk egg with milk.
Add meat, onions, garlic and seasonings in a large bowl. Mix well using your hands.
Divide mixture into 6-8 portions ( about 1/3 cup each ).
Lay a cabbage leaf flat and place a portion in the center.
Tuck in sides and roll up.
Place roll in 6x9 dish seam side down. Repeat with remaining leaves.
Whisk tomato sauce, chicken broth, sugar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste together.
Season to taste.
Pour over rolls and cover with foil.
Bake for 90 minutes. Let stand for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
Optional: Add a few tablespoons of tomato sauce to the meat mixture.
